About the Performers

Andrea England:
Nova Scotia born, Toronto-based Andrea England has a unique ability to work successfully in two different music worlds: writing and performing as a folk/roots/country solo artist herself while placing multi-genre co-writes with major label pop stars and fellow indie artists. England's sensitive songcraft and rigorous attention to lyrical integrity is grafted to a calibre of musicianship befitting her material on Hope & Other Sins, her critically acclaimed sophomore release. Produced in Nashville by Colin Linden, Hope & Other Sins has topped Galaxy Canada's FolkRoots charts and been a mainstay on RMR's Top 50 Folk Albums. Hope & Other Sins may very well break - and then mend - the most cynical of hearts.

Bob Kemmis:
Bob Kemmis supported himself through the 90s as a guitar tech for Vancouver pop/rock band The Odds, and during that time had several sojourns in Nashville, where he was a guest writer at Warner Chappell Music. Finding Nashville's 'cookie cutter' songwriting formula less than stimulating, Bob returned to Vancouver and began to concentrate on solo performances and the recording of his debut CD "Kemmisutra". And so began the evolution of Bob Kemmis as a singer/songwriter to be reckoned with. Concurrent with tours with 54-40 as keyboard/guitarist, opening for Jann Arden, Chris Isaak, Ron Sexsmith, Badly Drawn Boy and Jim Cuddy, and guitar tech-ing for Bryan Adams and Feist, Bob has continued to hone his solo career and record stellar solo albums teeming with superbly crafted songs. His latest project, The Mocking Bird, has released a teaser, "The Fireproof E.P.", which is further proof that Bob is one of the most creative writers in Canada today.

Cara Luft:

Cara Luft is a Juno Award-winning singer-songwriter-guitarist extraordinaire, that rare artist steeped in folk and traditional roots music almost from birth, yet willing to alter the fabric, stretch the boundaries and fearlessly bend genres and styles. A co-founder of folk trio The Wailin' Jennys, Cara's spirit and innate musicianship were instrumental in their rise to the forefront of the North American roots scene. Since leaving the trio, Luft has released 3 solo albums, all to international critical acclaim. Her much-anticipated third solo album, Darlingford, shines a bright light on Cara's skill at turning personal heartbreak into universal themes that resonate deeply with listeners. Darlingford took the top Canadian album spot on the international FolkDJ playlists for the summer of 2013. She was a semi-finalist in both the international Songwriting Competition and the Unsigned Only Competitions, and won the Galaxie Rising Star award.

John Mann:
John Mann has earned a devoted fan base through his remarkable career as an actor and Juno Award-winning musician, singer, songwriter, and founding member of the internationally renowned Spirit of the West. With 11 albums and countless tours of the UK, Europe and North America with Spirit of the West to his credit, John returns with his newest work as a solo artist called The Waiting Room. John’s lyrical approach to The Waiting Room conveys the journey though cancer John took from 2009 through 2011, revealing the most vulnerable moments of recovery from this life-threatening disease. It is a multifaceted project that John will be performing as a solo musician as well as developing into a stage production for theatre.

Host Shari Ulrich took up the Bluebird North torch from Ron Irving over 17 years ago and is committed to bringing great songwriters to Vancouver audiences.  A new solo album on Borealis (CD release concert at Rogue Folk Club on March 14th!) is her 21st overall, including her work with Pied Pumkin, UHF, her trio with Barney Bentall and Tom Taylor and The High Bar Gang’s “Lost & Undone”just released on True North. A long time songwriting educator, she will be teaching a week long songwriting course with Bill Henderson and Jodi Proznick Aug. 11-15 at the VSO School of Music.
