In the Schools

The S.A.C. is working on expanding the In the Schools program across the country. The objective is to expose young people to the craft of songwriting through a series of intimate workshops, session and mini concerts by professional Canadian songwriters. The goal is to help a generation of music fans (and some new music creators) listen to their music differently and in turn, share music their differently.  With support from corporate funding the S.A.C. hopes to expand these initiatives into more Canadian elementary and secondary schools. If you know of a school, teacher or principal who would be receptive to such a program, please have them contact the S.A.C. head office.

During the fall of 2007, the S.A.C. went into schools in Ottawa, Winnipeg and Halifax and offered students an inside look at what a songwriters does, how and why they write songs and what it takes to be a songwriter. Christopher Ward (songwriter, ex-Much Music VJ) hosted session in these schools alongside local songwriters in each city. Ana Miura (Ottawa singer/songwriter and 2006 Songs from the Heart contest winner) performed with Christopher in John McRae Secondary School. In Winnipeg, hometown singer /songwriter Hayley Gene joined Christopher and a large group of students at a session at St. James Collegiate and Halifax’s own R&B/Hip hop sensation Jordan Croucher shared the stage with Christopher at Citadel High School and a large group of music and english students.
