Biography:
Bob Menzies is a Canadian folk-rock, alt-country singer-songwriter originally from Montreal and now living in Sooke, a small oceanside town on Vancouver Island’s south coast.
He has recorded 5 albums of original music previously and his newest recording, IN THE COMPANY OF STRANGERS will be released in the spring of 2018.
Bob identifies with current Alt-country/Americana singers such as Leeroy Stagger, John Prine, Jason Isbel, Ryan Adams, and Chris Stapleton. He states his major influences range from early rock and rollers, Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison and Buddy Holly to folk-singers of the sixties such as Gordon Lightfoot, Ian and Sylvia, Leonard Cohen, Phil Ochs, and Bob Dylan.
His first album, BREAKING TIME, produced in 2012 by Mark Nakamura in Toronto, was a lifetime in the making and a year in the writing. The next album, ONE MORE HIGHWAY, followed in 2013. It was produced by Russell Gray and followed in the folk-rock vein landing a favourable, if limited, critical reception.
Then Nashville beckoned and he nestled in on the Hopson Plantation just outside of Clarksdale, Mississippi to hone the songs for CITIZENS OF NASHVILLE, and as producer Larry Beaird said, “You’re in Nashville, son, you’re gonna get a country record.” Well, not quite. Although country-infused, with some of them world-famous Nashville cats, it still retained his folky sound in the poetry, story-telling and relevance of the lyrics.
This immersion in the blues while in Mississippi, set the tone for the two records to come next, JOHN KEATS in 2015 with the eponymous lead single had a title not seen before in Nashville. OLD SOULS followed in 2016 and was also produced in Nashville.
In 2017, Bob hooked up with an old friend, Andrew Kesler, a Saskatchewan native, who had engineered and mixed the ONE MORE HIGHWAY project. Andrew had moved to LA and was now active as a session musician, producer and arranger. Kesler took on the project and put together a stellar group of LA’s finest sideman to record IN THE COMPANY OF STRANGERS, for release in 2018.
The story goes on.
