Mitch the Motorman

Mitch the Motorman
D
I just rolled in for a couple of days
G
I was sittin’ in a bar out Calgary way
A D
A girl walks up and looks me in the eye

D
She says come on boy let’s have us a time
G
I think you know what I got in mind
A D
I got what you want, you just bring the rye

D
Well I just about nearly fell out of my chair
G
When I looked and saw what she had there
A D
A woman like that flauntin herself around

D
Ya see I work on the rigs and I’m stoned all day
G
Hardly earnin my hard earned pay
A D
Dreamin of her when I roll into town

D G D
So I sez to her, Hot Damn!
G
My name is Mitch and I’m a Motorman
A D
I work on the rigs drillin for Alberta crude

D
The toolpush he don’t want me to stay
G
The roughnecks can’t tell the time of day
A D
The driller’s a jerk and I do all the work

D
Well I could see she couldn’t believe her ears,
G
I knew I had one too many beers
A D
I fell down and gave her a great big smile

D
She leaped back and said she wasn’t sure
G
That a man like me was right for her
A D
Motormen she says don’t have much style

D
I knew right then I’d blown my chance

G
I figgered I’d never even get a dance
A D
So I picked myself up and headed for the door

D
She yells Hold on Mitch don’t leave so soon
G
We got all night the stars and the moon
A D
What the hell are ya leavin so early for?

D G D
So she sez to me, Hot Damn!
G
Your name is Mitch and you’re a Motorman
A D
You work on the rigs drillin for Alberta crude
D
The toolpush he don’t want you to stay
G
The roughnecks can’t tell the time of day
A D
The driller’s a jerk and you do all the work

D
She says you work on the rigs but you make me smile
G
So why don’t you stick around for a while
A D
You and me could make one hell of a team

D
But as things got rollin I woke up
G
The driller’s givin me a kick in the butt
A D
And I knew for sure I’d never end that dream

D G D
So I sez to him, Hot Damn!
G
My name is Mitch and I’m a Motorman
A D
I work on the rigs drillin for Alberta crude
D
The toolpush he don’t want me to stay
G
The roughnecks can’t tell the time of day
A D
And you’re a jerk and I do all the work

Biography:

My song Mitch the Motorman made semi-finalist at 2016 International Songwriting Competition. http://www.songwritingcompetition.com - very nice!

Started out playing the drums and moved on to guitar. Parked my music for a few decades to raise a family and now I'm back at it.

I'm a writer first. The lyrics have to tell a story. There are plenty of hits over the years where the melodies are so strong, the lyrics don't really matter much. The perfect song is where both are equal.

Much of my inspiration comes from JJ Cale, a really interesting songwriter. He broke a lot of the rules about chord progressions, hooks etc. He exemplified the idea that music, like painting, is art, not necessarily a formula or an "industry." All that matters is that someone enjoys the music.

My song Mitch the Motorman is about a real guy I knew that worked in the oilpatch. There aren't many oilpatch songs, so it's a bit unique. Guys that worked in the oilpatch say it really does strike home based on their experience.
