Songs by FREEMAN DRE

When I first met my father i didn't have a clue. The first words that he told me were the last ones that were true. He said "this dessert’s made for walking and there's nothing you can do" except go on...on...on onwards to Babylon.

Then i met my mother she took me to the water, she sent me down the river to avoid the kingdom’s slaughter, she raised me as nurse in the service of his daughter. it was on...on...on onwards to Babylon

The wrong man took the throne when the king of Egypt died, and more than ever know before the dessert sun it fried. So grab your things we leave tonight, who's coming for the ride? We're going on...on...on onwards to Babylon.

when I first met my brother i stared into his face he’d battled through all the cold wars and the seven deadly plagues. He said "I don’t know where we’re going but I heard about this place” and we went on...on...on onwards to Babylon.

when i met my sister she was already a lady she told me of our fathers plan and a land where we'd be saved. Then she bundled up her weapons, turned and walked away and she went on...on...on
onwards to Babylon.

The wrong man took the throne when the king of Egypt died, and more than ever know before the dessert sun it fried. So grab your things we leave tonight, who's coming for the ride? We're going on...on...on onwards to Babylon.

The economy’s down aint no work around and the bank’s taking homes from the poor.
Its there’s, not yours if you can’t make your mortgage.
It’s good to have faith in lord.
When it all goes bust in God we trust
depending on where you were born
and if you do what you’re told there’ll be streets paved with gold.
It’s good to have faith in lord.

I got faith in the lord. I got faith in the lord. I got faith in the lord…at least till’ I’m bored.

So many have tried in our culture of pride. We live and we die by the sword, and they’ll tell ya the same from Kandahar to Spain. It’s good to have faith in lord.
Sammy and Ray just back and they say it’s getting much worse than before.
Be what it may it feels better to prey. It’s good to have faith in the lord.

I got faith in the lord. I got faith in the lord. I got faith in the lord…at least till’ I’m bored.

Since the terrorist attacks we’ve been there in Iraq. Two hundred thousand or more. With our planes and our tanks and our funds and our banks. It’s good to have faith in the lord.
Because it’s an eye for and eye and I aint scared to die, go ahead, and sign me up for that war. If there’s oil for our cars then victory’s ours. It’s good to have faith in lord.

Oh my darling oh my girl seems we spent a lot of time walking round on this old world. Seems we had a lot to find. Oh my darling oh my girl seems we’ve had a lot to drink. I just move when I just move. Seems it’s best when I don’t think.
This is the part of the song that hurts you. This is the part of the movie that makes you cry. This is the hardest part. Make a promise, cross your heart; stick a needle in your eye.

Oh my darling oh my babe there aint nothing left to say. This is where ya kiss my cheek right before you board that plane. Oh my darling oh my love there’s still places I must roam. I still don’t know who I am. I still don’t know what I call home. This is the part of the song that hurts you. This is that part of the movie that makes you cry. This is the hardest part. Make promise, cross your heart; stick a needle in your eye.

That guy we call Oak Tree is out on the corner with a paper bag he put on top of his head. A dog patch hardcore tat, a little couch made of cardboard and a sign that says “Back from the Dead”.
Well, back from the Dead? Now I’m scratching my head like I just found time for reflection. It seems that crazy guy just up and changed my life and I was only trying to   make a connection.

The liquor store is busy as it tends to be on Thursdays, and everything is run of the mill.
I say “we’re a freak show.” He says “no, we’re just people trying to get by.” Makes you wonder how many of us of us will. Still, who can be calm with all the signs on the lawns from last year’s federal elections. Then he laughed “you think that we were free? You’re just like them and I can’t believe you’d have the nerve to try and make a connection.

There’s an undercover cop car keeps driving round my block. He’s taking all the corners real slow. He leans over to his partner all cocky like “I think we got this locked.” But there’s so much going on that he don’t know. Still, who can be calm with all the bodies on the lawns. No matter what you do for your protection. I think a little paranoia makes a whole lot of sense when you’re out there trying to make a connection.

Don't worry baby the world's going to end but I think you're doing just fine.
Stick to the course and try to ignore it when frogs start to fall from the sky.
In a world where the system is danger and people don't talk they just scream,
you'd be six hundred feet above everyone, and I'd be the man of your dreams.

So calm down babe it's just the invention of time,
I promise to pay for our crawlspace if you promise to pay for our crime
in a world that plays out like a movie we can write and direct our own scenes
where you're six hundred feet above everyone and I'll play the man of your dreams.

Hold on tightly my love,
the hourglass countdown begins.
I promise to pay for our dinner tonight if you promise to pay for our sins.
In a world that's about to explode on itself you'd go to further extremes
and fly six hundred feet above everyone,  and I'd be the man of your dreams.

Walk with me baby we've come to the end of the line,
there's no holding back of the good stuff there aint going to be a next time
forget about fate when the world starts to shake and it all starts to break at the seams cause you'll be six hundred feet above everyone and I'd be the man of your dreams.

Biography:

The richly textured atmosphere and mood may remind you of Leonard Cohen and Tom Waits. You’ll hear echoes of Lou Reed’s sketchy, fuzzed-out urbaneness and the visceral honesty of alt-country greats like the Violent Femmes and Steve Earle.

That’s Freeman Dre, and his Kitchen Party is a cult following waiting to happen.

His band The Kitchen Party takes its name from after great and timeless East Coast tradition of friends and neighbors gathering together in the kitchen for an evening of laughter, drinks, and music. The soul of this music comes from Freeman Dre’s apartment in the heart of one of Toronto’s most creatively fertile neighbourhoods, Parkdale. It’s a place where friends hang out in the kitchen most every night, where a raccoon recently tried to give birth in Dre’s vinyl collection, where Hank the cat comes to chill out from a cat’s life in the mean streets and alleys, there is always a couch to crash on, and a lot of music gets made.

Dre's writing style is characterized by great autobiographical story-telling, and his signature raspy singing growl. A street-wise troubadour with a propensity for writing original tunes with incisive lyrics, free of unnecessary metaphor, Dre delivers each tune straight from the gut in a husky voice ravaged from smoke, vodka, and late nights howling at the moon...
