Biography:
Janice Starodub, “Never say Never.” Most people who have three children (ages 10 to 15), have the responsibilities of doing all the duties of wife and mother (hockey, dance, homework), AND are getting over a debilitating illness, would consider their plate to be full. But not Janice Starodub. She is just getting warmed up. Now adding the serious study of the art and craft of songwriting, Nashville style, AND assisting members of a young Canadian country rock band, this girl doesn’t shy from challenges.
Living in a small town outside of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, she manages to keep it all together. How, is anybody’s guess. But she does it.
Raised in Canada, on a steady diet of rock, pop, soul, music, She loved those ‘Tough women attitudes, Janis Joplin, Stevie Nicks, Joan Jett, Heart. She had an affinity to those ‘Babes with the low raspy voices.’ To this day, her own voice reflects her influences. She studied piano through the Royal Conservatory of Music. She was active in Figure skating, volleyball, dance, as well as a modeling career that included print and video ads.
While teaching for 14 years she fell in love, married and had kids. It seemed she had it all. Then tragedy struck in the form of a neurological disease. At one point she could barely move and after searching throughout Canada, from specialist after specialist, as a last resort she turned to the world famous Mayo Clinic in America. She finally got a handle on her illness and started fighting back, just like everything she has done.
Through the drama of that difficulty, she started hearing “inner voices” that led her to explore songwriting. With the support of her husband and three kids she started taking online classes. Through Nashville Songwriter’s Association International (NSAI) she found her way into contact with Marc-Alan Barnette - internationally known, teacher, producer, writer, and professional mentor of writers and artists. Janice, with the help of Barnette, is taking her songwriting to a new level, learning more and more about the music industry, and is meeting new friends and co-writers. She is presently in the process of having songs demoed in the studio.
So while it is a daunting challenge for anyone to take on the music industry at any age, this girl has faced tougher challenges, and is on a pretty good roll. Several songs, co-writers, and Nashville contacts prove that she is on the right track. AND that is just the beginning. Time will tell, but if talent, common sense, determination, and perseverance have anything to do with it, she is in very good shape.
She will never be one that say’s “If I had only.” She has!!
