Carolina

Carolina
(Lyrics and Music by Mike Charko and Keith Shields)

I called you up to see how you were
So you think that I still care
Don’t get me wrong, I’m movin’ on
With a part of me still there

Asheville’s pretty this time of year
And I want to be there with you
But you left me at the altar
With tears in my eyes, feeling just like a fool

Said you needed some more time
Just a little bit more time
To live on the wild side of life
But you’ve got me going out of my mind
Getting you off my mind

Carolina in the spring time
I don’t want to be someone’s fool
Carolina in the spring time
I don’t want to be on my own

Asheville’s pull is calling me back
Like a magnet to the north
I hope that guy is good to you
If he knows a violet’s worth

(Instrumental bridge)

I hear there’s a job in East Tennessee
With a bunch of working men
A foundry is good for singing the blues
When your heart is cracked and bent

Maybe I need some more time
Just a little bit more time
To find a new kind of life
But you’ve got me going out of my mind
I can’t get you off my mind

Carolina in the spring time
I don’t want to be someone’s fool
Carolina, scent of Jasmine
I don’t want to be on my own

Carolina with the flowers
I don’t want to be someone’s fool
Carolina in the spring time
I don’t want on my own

Flowers

Flowers
His heart was smitten by this sweet young girl
She was the one who could rock his world
He didn't quite know the right protocol
But he was sure she was the best of all
So he brought her the perfect gift

He brought her flowers
When he didn't know what to do
He brought her flowers
To prove his love was true
When the road was rough
Or when times were good
When he knew his love could never be enough
But this love was all he knew
So he brought her flowers

She said I'm not sure about marrying you
This world is big and there is so much to do
Afraid he'd lost her to another goal
So he reached down inside his soul
And he promised with all of his might

When she brought him their son
And three more girls
He had all he could want in this world
When the kids moved out
And she was blue
He did what he had to do

The last time I saw him he was all alone
His eyes looked tired and his beard had grown
He walked along with a shuffling stroll
As he headed on down the road
To a plot where a gravestone stood

Home

Follow this lane to the clothes on the line
The garden, the trees, and the hills that we'd walk
The buzzing of summer, the ponds, and the hay
Blossom of thistle, and sweet evening stalks

Home
Home
Home
Home

Driving left hand roads to rivers and sheep
The heather, the wind, and the salt of the sea
Ruddy complexions and hair of light red
This lonely shore she is calling me

Home

Home
Home

Turn up this way 'til I see your sweet face
Gardening gloves and your hair out of place
A smile, a kiss, I'm lost in your arms
Right here with you I have built this space.

No Hit Wonder

No Hit Wonder

It started for me in ninety-three
The music was all about you and me
Back then the road was necessity
Playing in towns and bars for free

A little band of one plus three
Told tales of love and mortality
Wrote some tunes to make you laugh
Money was split in half and a half

Give me a song with a driving beat
Give me a song with harmonies
Give me a song that makes you feel just right
And we’ll sing it for you tonight

We played our songs from coast to coast
Every mic time had a host
And every coast was just the same
Chasing down our fame

Drums were beat and songs were sung
Beer glasses slammed and rung
Original tunes and covers with flair
Worked hard to get an appreciative stare

Give me a song with a driving beat
Give me a song with harmonies
Give me a song that makes you feel just right
And we’ll sing for you tonight

We played at all the greatest halls
Heritage Grill and the Rusty Gull
Good Earth Café and Tommy G-s
That little Bluebird wanna be

Professionals with poetic grace
Critics would sing our praise
Out on the road behind the wheel
Still looking for that record deal

Give me a song with a driving beat
Give me a song with harmonies
Give me a song that makes you feel just right
And we’ll sing it for you tonight

When I was young I could breathe the air
Of getting my shot and climbing the stair
Grammys and Junos would be mine
Nothing could stop me this time

Nashville, Memphis, and LA
Oh the halls I’d play
Singing about places called Home
Angels in Blue Jeans never would roam

Give me a song with a driving beat
Give me a song with harmonies
Give me a song that makes you feel just right
And we’ll sing it for you tonight

Back home I’m famous just like the thunder
Known ever as the “No Hit Wonder”

Sympathy for the Dead

Sympathy for the Dead

Down the long dark corridor
I heard the sounds I couldn’t expect
Her clothes were strewn on the floor
My heart was frozen in my chest

Door was open just a crack
Pushed it wide for I must be sure
Gun on the floor she always packed
It would be used for this cure

It was over in an instant
Just another crime of passion
Punished to the full extent
Swift justice or retribution

The trial was over in three days
No time to hear all the facts
Nothing ‘bout his abusive ways
To explain my attack

It was over in an instant
Just another crime of passion
Punished to the full extent
Swift justice or retribution

Now the doors close on my plan
Excuses ringing in my head
Surely he was an evil man?
Becky’s safe now the monster’s dead.

It was over in an instant
Just another crime of passion
Punished to the full extent
Swift justice or retribution

Down the long dark corridor
I hear from those who will wish me well
Those now standing at their doors
And those who wished I’d just go to hell

Over in an instant
Payment for a crime of passion
Punished to the full extent
Swift justice or retribution

It was over in an instant
Just another crime of passion
Punished to the full extent
Swift justice or retribution

Our duo performs in open mic sessions, coffee houses, and pubs. I love the thrill of holding an audience in the palm of my hand.

These songs represent a collaboration with Mike Charko. Together we make up the duo called "Key of Zed."

I have wide interests. I have a Bachelor of Science in Molecular Biology, a Bachelor of Religious Education, and a Masters of Christian Studies - Interdisciplinary. I write in the areas of science and faith and keep a blog at www.KeithShields.ca. I compete in Olympic distance triathlons and enjoy swimming, cycling, and running.
