Marty Deller is best known for his work in the Canadian progressive rock band FM. With FM he wrote and recorded eight albums, toured North America, was nominated for a Juno and received a Gold album for the album Black Noise. He has shared the stage with many prominent artists such as Rush, Supertramp, Heart, Keith Emerson, The Fix, and Max Webster to name a few.
Marty studied piano and jazz composition with Ted Moses and jazz drumming with Jim Blackley. He then enrolled in York University, studying jazz performance and composition with John Gittens and graduate studies in electronic music with David Rosenboom. Marty then studied composition and arranging with Todd Booth in Toronto and film scoring with Steven Scott Smalley (Batman, Mission Impossible) in Los Angeles followed by vocal training with internationally renown mezzo-soprano, Fides Krucker.
In addition to his recordings with FM, Marty has recorded with many prominent artists including, (in no particular order) Geddy Lee (Rush), Alex Lifeson (Rush), Daniel Lanois (U2, Perter Gabriel, Bob Dylan), Ben Mink (k.d. laing, Heart), Liz Rodriges (Eminem), Martha and the Muffins, Jane Siberry, Sheri Camp, Ashley MacIsaac, Ken Ramm (Uphoria), Nash the Slash (solo), David Pritchard, Marie-Lynne Hammond, Mario Castro Neves, Jackie Richardson, Tompson Highway, and Joe Sealy. He has also performed on numerous commercials and soundtrack recordings.
As a composer, Marty has scored feature films, television series, documentaries and created sound designs for theatre and art installations. His music has been featured on CBC’s Jazz Radio Canada and more recently, was the arranger, conductor and score composer for Show Off!, the annual CBC Television Special hosted by Jian Ghomeshi.
